Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used as a tool for activism. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate through art. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. In 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. As in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the home of one of the jury. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be a junior publicist at the studio that was small. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Autumn Riley is an American actress, best known for American Experience (1997) and A More Perfect Union (2009).
